The Chiswell Society

The Chiswell Society

The main plot follows Victor, a young man from the upper middle class, who lives with his family in London. The story takes place in the Victorian Era. Every drabble is a continuation of the previous one, so even though you can start reading at any point, it's recommended to read the story from the beginning.

Victor: A young man, who dropped out of Oxford and his family is still mad at him for it. He now has to work with his father, who has his own business. Thanks to that job, he meets Henry, who is the son of his father's client. One day, Henry invites him to the Chiswell Society meeting.

Henry (also known as young Mr Astley): He's a few years older than Victor and sometimes represents his father at business meetings. He's married and he and his wife live together in their own house. He got mostly married because of the pressure from his family and from society. He secretly attends the Chiswell Society meetings since he was invited by his first love interest when they were attending a university.

Emily: Victor's fiancé. She really likes Victor and was raised in a world where women are submissive housewives and that's how she envisions her future. But she always kind of hoped that she could do something else with her life.

Mrs. Dawes: Victor's mother. She's very religious and she wants Victor to have the life he's supposed to live (which in her eyes is to finish his studies, get married and have a good job). She still tends to treat Victor as a child because she thinks he's not responsible enough to take care of himself.

Mr. Dawes: Victor's father. He has his own business and he would like Victor to take over the business one day. That's a part of the reason he pressures him to work with him.

Jane: Victor's cousin. She's almost thirty and still single, therefore she's often the target of gossip. She got engaged to a man when she was 21 but then he broke off the engagement and since then, she is not interested in getting married.

The Chiswell Society: A secret club for men who like men. The only way to get in is to be invited by a member. The secrecy is necessary due to the criminalization of homosexuality at that time. They organize different meetings, parties etc. At most of them, they just drink and talk but occasionally the parties can get quite wild.

Other characters who can sometimes appear in the story are Henry's parents, his wife and other members of the Chiswell Society. I might add them in the future when we learn more about them.

The Struggle

Drabble:

It was late afternoon. Victor and Emily were walking through The Regent's Park, talking. It was strange. They knew each other since childhood but when they got engaged, it suddenly felt inappropriate to be alone together. They both laughed when the wind almost blew their hats off.
Victor couldn't help it but imagine Henry being here with them. His slightly longer black hair, blowing in the wind. Victor imagined running his fingers through it. Henry's eyes locked into Victor's. Henry's lips.
And then came the guilt. This wasn't fair to Emily.
But how do you stop your brain from wishing?!

Dinner Night

Drabble:

"And he said: "You would kiss me if you cared about me."," said Jane calmly and took another sip from her glass.
"Darling, please, don't be so vulgar," replied Victor's mother. "Let's change the topic, shall we?"
Victor was sitting on the opposite side of the table right next to Emily. His cheeks were flushed due to the amount of wine he already consumed tonight. How he hated these family events. And Jane, his cousin, always had stories to tell. Victor presumed she made them all up in order to shock everybody.
He wasn't so bold. He would never tell.

Locked up

Drabble:

It was late. Victor was sitting at his desk, writing. The only source of light in the room was a tall white candle. He was trying to be discreet. Since the costume party, he was forbidden from leaving the home alone.
"Dear Henry," he wrote again. There was a big pile of scrunched up pieces of paper on the floor. He just couldn't get this right. He wanted to apologize, to say he misses him. Could he?! Should he?! They barely knew each other.
He checked the time. Eleven? Almost. One word after another.
A love letter? Sin? A confession.

Raindrops

Drabble:

Victor was standing on the street, looking up. Two floors, square windows with light brown frames and big intimidating wooden door.
Was his mother still awake? Did she tell his father? Is he going to be able to come home after that?
He was cold and freezing. It was raining heavily and he couldn't find a cab. He could see lightning cut through the black sky. The rumbling noise afterwards startled him. It was close. Like a drum, mourning a dead person.
His skin was still sensitive from all those kisses. Touches.
He turned around. He can't come home tonight.

Something Was Missing

Drabble:

Guilt. In every single bone. He never talked to his parents like that. He never ran away.
Now, he was sitting next to Henry. They both were wearing masks. Victor improvized by wearing his fanciest clothes and a crown his father made him when he was a child. Henry was wearing a red army uniform.
This party was different. Bolder.
Two people were kissing in front of them. They were men. One was wearing a dress. Victor's world was spinning. A new, unexplored territory. The last piece of a puzzle.
"Can I kiss you?" asked Henry softly and Victor nodded.

Dark and Silent

Drabble:

The house was dark and silent. It was quite late and Victor was holding an oil lamp and carefully stepping on the stairs, trying not to make much noise. He knew, his mother would never let him go. She would tell him he will get robbed or murdered (or drunk which in her eyes would probably be even worse).
"Where do you think you're going?" somebody asked from the bottom of the stairway. His mother was standing there, holding a candle. He silently cursed and before she could say anything more, he growled: "I am not a child anymore, mother."

Scents and Razors

Úvodní poznámka:

We need more about Victor's life, don't you agree? Enjoy.

Drabble:

Since the last time, they've met, or maybe since that night, Victor couldn't get Henry out of his head. And he wasn't sure why.
Now, he was at the barbershop. The chair wasn't very comfortable but he found the feeling of a razor, caressing his cheeks and neck, calming. Tomorrow was the party, Henry invited him to. He needed a costume.
But today was even more important. His parents invited Emily for a dinner. Victor wasn't surprised. He was old enough for marriage. Why would he say no?!
His head started spinning. It must have been from all those perfumes.

Tell Me The Secret

Drabble:

"What are you doing here?" Victor whispered when he saw him.
"Well, nice to see you, too," answered Henry in a reserved voice. "I am here to discuss business if you must know."
It took Victor a few seconds. Yes. That's right. His father. Henry's father. Business.
"I'm sorry," Victor looked away, embarrassed.
"Did you think I was here to see you?" continued Henry.
Victor felt foolish. And disappointed.
Henry reached into his pocket. A letter.
"You'll need a password this time."
Victor nodded, confused. Henry's breath was warm on his earlobe. Two words.
It was almost time for dinner.

Morning Breath

Úvodní poznámka:

So I wanted to write more about Margaret but I guess you'll have to wait to find out more.

This drabble is a part of a story but you can read it on its own if you want :)

Drabble:

"Victor, you need to wake up!"
Victor mumbled something and covered his head with a blanket. He was up all night and sneaked in just a few hours ago. Now, it all felt like a dream.
"Victor, are you listening to me?!"
During moments like this, he wished to be married already so he wouldn't have to deal with his mother anymore.
His body was sore and something was screaming inside his brain. He needed a bath.
The memories were blurry but he could still taste the alcohol. He touched his lips. Hot, red, swollen. But it wasn't just alcohol.

A Lady in Red

Drabble:

Smell, sound, voices. A lady dressed in red was entering the room. Victor would stand up if he wasn't so shocked. A woman? At night in a pub? Was she a prostitute?
A man, much drunker than Victor ever was, was following her. She clearly didn't like it but she let him put his arm around her waist anyway.
"Who is she?" Victor asked Henry before he could stop himself.
"She is queeeen Margaret," immediately shouted the drunk. "She is the queen of all roads. They all lead back... to her bed." he giggled but nobody else found it funny.

Závěrečná poznámka:

I've had this idea before the topic came up so I just changed it a little bit. I also had to delete some parts I liked which is a bummer (also the ending is not great). But hopefully, you enjoyed it anyways :)

The Opium Dream

Úvodní poznámka:

I had difficulties to write a drabble today because... time and inspiration and stuff. So hopefully it's okay.

Drabble:

The light was dim and the air was filled with the scent of opium. Two men were sitting on a divan, talking. Their half-empty glasses were standing on the table.
Henry was saying something but Victor wasn't listening. He could only hear humming in his ears. Like from a factory.
Victor noticed the men were sitting very close. Touching. He could feel Henry's fingers on his thigh. He had two glasses already and the poisoned air wasn't helping either. He needed to concentrate.
"Five and five is ten, three times three is nine." more random numbers. Counting. It usually helped.

The Unknown

Úvodní poznámka:

Original fandom. Previous part: http://sosaci.net/node/28950 (but can be read separately ;))

Drabble:

"Knock three times shortly and say I invited you."
Victor did as he was told.
It felt strange. Wrong even. Was it too late to leave?
Inside, the place looked like a normal pub. Men of all ages were talking and drinking. Somebody was smoking opium.
Mr. Astley was standing by the stairs, holding a glass of sherry.
"I am glad you came," he smiled. "Can I call you Victor?"
Victor nodded, nervous, unable to speak.
"Call me Henry, then. Come."
The room was silent. Victor felt as if he was being watched when he followed Henry up the stairs.

An Invitation

Úvodní poznámka:

Original fandom. Let me know if you want more :)

Drabble:

The sky was already dark and the cold wind was pinching his cheeks and making them red. It looked like he was blushing. Soft petals tickled his palm as he gently held the flower. A green carnation.
That afternoon, he had an appointment with one of father's clients. Young Mr. Astley. His forearm was still burning from the firm touch. Victor pretended he didn't understand.
Why did he give him the carnation? An invitation. Risking everything. Losing his wife, business, reputation. He could’ve ended up with nothing. They both could.
Victor took a deep breath and knocked. Come what may.

Závěrečná poznámka:

Have a great DMD 2018 everybody! <3
