Three years or so after Red Dwarf laid in a course back to Earth, Holly elected herself Captain. 

Red Dwarf didn't need a captain, but there were certain protocols that required confirmation from a senior crew member, and she was not about to go through that whole rigamarole again. 

There was a process, albeit not a democratic one. Getting herself declared sentient, finding loopholes in JMC policy, finding the right forms; all of that was easy. Resisting the urge to add pips to her projection - that was tricky. 

She had to, though. She'd never hear the end of it from Arnold.
