Protagonista příběhu Jim vypráví o vlivu, který na jeho život měla Ántonia - češka, která do Ameriky dorazila se svou rodinou spolu s dalšími imigranty. Kniha se velmi bravurně soustředí na životy ženských postav, které by klasicky byly upozaděny.
