Orpheus gazed at their homeworld that was about to die.
A billion years passed since he was born here, and while he was immortal, Earth wasn’t. The Sun was entering its next lifecycle, and for the planet it was the end.
But even if their civilization now spanned many galaxies, some didn’t want to abandon the world they originated from.
Orpheus initiated the process, and the Megastructure expanded. Sheets of super-dense plates materialized high up, shielding the surface from baleful sunlight. Soon, the entire Earth will be encapsulated by protective cover.
And it will be ready for its next voyage.
1K made final checks of packed equipment to make sure they didn’t forget anything. The first voyage to Mars was about to take off.
“Is everything ready?” asked Athena.
“Yes,” 1K confirmed, “we can go.”
“You know there aren’t going to be any puzzles there for you to solve,” Athena teased him.
1K laughed. “Unless Jacques is actually right and some aliens have left us some.” They entered the ship. “But the entire universe is one big puzzle for us to solve, and this is the first step.”
She nodded. “We can do anything, as long as we are together.”
Wren labored on his grandest project: a glass dome that was going to cover the entire city, protecting the outside world as culmination of the Goal.
He was somewhat concerned about how much resources the construction required; but the mayor explained that it was for the greater good, and he accepted that.
The sun rose above the horizon, its rays passing through the glass panels in, across and out the opposite end of the city, and the amplified beam struck the outside forest, causing brushfire.
Wren watched the flames bemusedly. He will have to ask for a more diffused glass.
Mayor Byron was settling in his new office. He had so many plans for future development of the city, but first he had to take care of some paperwork.
He opened the letter that his predecessor left him and read it. It contained mostly unasked-for advices that he had no intent of heeding, but one passage caught his eye.
Lastly, do not dismiss those that are of different opinion and might oppose you; their concerns may be real, and you should address them, not suppress.
Byron set the letter down, looking pensively. Even the staunchest adversaries deserve respect, he thought.
Helga subscibed to a philosophy course that the Archive scholars were organizing.
“So you’re saying that if I wasn’t here then, I wouldn’t be here now?” she asked Elwin. “Then when does this happen?” “Now,” answered Elwin. “Everything that happens now is happening now.” “Now? What happened to ‘then’?” she continued. “We passed ‘then’,” he replied. “When?” Helga looked puzzled. “Well, ‘now’,” said Elwin, a hint of frustration creeping into his voice. “Can we go back to ‘then’?” pressed Helga. “Now?” “Not ‘now’, ‘then’.” “’Then’, when?” Elwin cried in desperation.
After Elwin nearly short-circuited, future philosophy courses were postponed indefinitely.
Helga (101) je dílem psychoterapeutka s mírným přesahem do (robotí) ezoteriky.

After she moved in to Yaqut’s place, Miranda got a luxurious chess set from her father as parting gift. She tried to teach Yaqut how to play the game, but he wasn’t really attuning to it. Their cats, however, seemed to love it.
Just like now, when they were sitting by the board, and Bean was poking at the tallest figure, almost as if attempting a Queen’s Gambit. Bruce’s response to the move was to sprawl across the board, rolling over and knocking down almost all figures.
Check-mate, thought Miranda, as she was picking up fallen pieces from the floor.
Bean je Mirandin kocour (černo-bílý... nebo bílo-černý?)
Among Jeremy’s responsibilities was also moderation of New Jerusalem’s discussion forums, which could be tedious at times.
Just like now, when he was going through the thread “Are frogs people?”
Jeremy read the debate with increased dismay. Occasionally he replied to individual posts, urging the discutees to refrain from offensive language and remain civil, but deep down he knew it was futile; when it came to toxicity in debate, the academics were by far the worst.
Finally, he concluded that enough was enough, and banned the entire thread. It made him feel like he just saved New Jerusalem from doom.
As their cats were quite demanding when it came to quality food, Damien and Atal were going to invent a new food type for them.
They set a large pot on the heater, and threw in things that cats were eating, like some dead rodents, insects, or a cup of catnip. The latter proved to be disastrous however; the concoction suddenly boiled over, spilling out of the pot and onto the floor, and started fuming heavily.
“What now?” asked Damien after shutting off the fire alarm.
Atal looked at the mess. “Maybe we could try honeysuckle next time?” he suggested.
Barzai viewed his latest artistic project: a large maze he named “Blooming Corals”. It was made of sculpted perma-plaster, depicting sea corals adorned with figurative flowers, to celebrate the beauty of nature as the ultimate sculptor. “Lose yourselves in Nature!” the promotion prospect said.
Problems arose when people started getting themselves lost in the maze literally.
Almost a quarter of visitors were sending distress signals for emergency extractions; several had to be evacuated after running out of battery power, and one desperate citizen even broke through the walls to get out.
Better rebuild it into a unicursal labyrinth, decided Barzai.
As their cats were quite demanding when it came to quality food, Damien and Atal were going to invent a new food type for them.
They set a large pot on the heater, and threw in things that cats were eating, like some dead rodents, insects, or a cup of catnip. Once the concoction was ready, they put it into a food bowl and gave it to the cats.
One cat approached the bowl and sniffed at the content. It screamed, its fur stood on end, and it bolted out like greased lightning.
“Maybe we should’ve tried honeysuckle?” commented Atal.
Mayor Hermanubis was reading the latest correspondence that was forwarded to him.
There were several complaints about Melville coming from Ovis and Malduc, citing numerous cases of blasphemy towards the Founder and general criticizing of everything that the Goal represented.
Hermanubis briefly considered summoning Melville to his office. He had no doubt that she would give him hell, but the prospect of just seeing her, just to hear her voice… it was too tempting.
He sighed. No, it wouldn’t be appropriate to misuse the power of his office like this. He will have to find another pretext to meet her.
The Archives were having a problem with mice infestation. To mitigate it, the Archive Scholars tried to apply cats, but to no success.
Firstly, the orange cat that Rand had obtained from Atal was quite fat. It was sleeping all days, making no effort whatsoever to hunt any mice, and giving Rand reproachful looks every time its food bowl was empty. He even witnessed a situation when a particularly cheeky mouse was stealing its food, and the cat just watched it dispassionately.
Rand decided to try some mousetraps instead. He wondered if he could use the cat as bait somehow.
Athena was always busy. There were so many things to do. She was so absorbed in her work that she didn’t notice Cornelius walk in.
“I’ve come to take you away,” he announced.
She blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You’ve been working too hard in the past years, you deserve a break,” he told her.
“But I’m busy–“ she tried to protest, but he stopped her with raised hand.
“I’ve set up camp near the lake. You’re going to be busy with me there for couple days at least.”
Athena smiled; she knew that resisting Cornelius was futile. “Very well, let’s go.”
Neith and her team were working in the birthing lab, assembling a new citizen.
It was always a laborious process. Their bodies were incredibly complex, and they had to be very careful to avoid any mistakes that could prove catastrophic.
She lifted the headplate, and paused. “Why is this all perforated?” she asked the assistant engineer.
He shrugged. “It’s an improved design, it’s supposed to help with brain cooling.”
“Is it water-tight?”
He hesitated. “I… think so?”
Neith set the headplate back down, and hoped that she wouldn’t have this one back in her lab to fix after first rainfall.
Lynerks and Trabuchet were working on a strange machine they discovered inside the dam.
“What’s it supposed to do?” asked Trabuchet, looking at the machine’s glass panel with a “McCaffee” logo.
“According to the ancient texts that I found, it was a device that produced massive amounts of energy that our ancestors were consuming,” said Lynerks. “I was hoping it might help solve our energy problems.”
Trabuchet flipped through the manual. “If I’m reading this correct, it was running on a substance called ‘coffee’ – do we have that?”
“No,” replied Lynerks, “but I could ask Chancey to grow us some.”
The lobby of New Jerusalem’s Metropolitan Library was newly being adorned by a large statue titled “Avid Reader”. It was made from marble, and depicted a robot reading a book, seated cross-legged in an alcove formed by more books.
“It looks grand, doesn’t it?” commented Jefferson. “And inspiring too – I hope it will entice more citizens to spend more of their time on good reading.”
“It seems to me that some must have misinterpreted that message,” replied Benaroya. He pointed at 1K, sitting under the statue in exactly the same position and playing passionately some puzzle game on his tablet.
Dissatisfied with the direction that New Jerusalem was heading, Byron finally decided to run for the mayor office in the next election.
He was currently putting together their candidate roster with Damien, when he suddenly stiffened. “I just received a message from Pellegrino – he wants to join the election on our roster.”
“We could just put him in the last place,” said Damien uncertainly.
“Have you gone mad?” Melville exclaimed. “Can you imagine what would happen if he got a majority of preferential votes?”
“Right,” conceded Damien, “better put him somewhere in the middle, he will not be that visible.”
The Cat assumed her position at the usual spot, and waited.
She basked in the sun, watching the two-legged worshippers passing by. The trick to lure them in was to look all noble, feigning polite disinterest. And sure enough, several of them stopped by to pet her with those metallic appendages of theirs.
But so far none of them brought any gifts of food. The sun was setting down, and Cat was getting restless.
Finally the Servant came. He picked her up into an embrace, and carried her to Home. She purred in delight when she heard the keyword “Dinner”.
Pellegrino was on his way to Melville’s workshop; she was still mad at him after that embarrassing incident with the bucket, and he wanted to make amends.
He had an iron placard with engraved apology “I am sorry” that he wanted to give her (she already had quite a collection of these), and was rehearsing what he was going to say, but when he rounded the corner into the corridor leading to the workshop, he heard furious cat screaming, and Melville swearing profusely. It seemed that Bruce was causing havoc again.
Pellegrino slowly backed out. Better leave it for later.
Yaqutův kocour Bruce rád chodí (bez dovolení) do Melviliny dílny a překáží tam.
Atal looked with sorrow at the mangled body of a robin that his cat brought in.
He knew he couldn’t blame her; she was just trying to be appreciative, but still her good intentions ended with death.
He brought his gaze to the tree where he knew the robin nested; he climbed up, and found the abandoned nest with three little eggs. The robin’s mate already left.
Atal carefully picked up the eggs to bring them to the wildlife rescue station. He couldn’t undo what happened to the poor bird, but at least the next generation could still be saved.
Byron was moving to a new apartment, and so he had the unpleasant duty of packing all his stuff. He was in the process of setting his books into the moving box; he opened one last drawer, and lifted the book at the bottom.
Read for me, Byron.
The image of Calvin came up suddenly on his mind. Her frame, glittering lightly in the moonlight, playful smile on her lips. In her hands a book, titled Le petit prince.
"Was this a gift from Calvin?" Alcatraz asked softly.
"Yes," Byron's voice was thick with emotion. "It was her favorite book."
“Byron, will you read for us again?” asked Hypatia. She and Sarabhai were together with Byron in the Dead City, looking for ancient human books.
“How about this one?” Sarabhai handed him a book titled Bedtime Stories (For Adults). “I think it’s one of their fairy tales books.”
Byron flipped through the pages, and Hypatia could swear that under his red chassis he blushed. “I don’t think it’s fairy tales – not in the sense as we imagine them.”
Sarabhai read through the text, and her eyes widened. “That’s – fascinating.” She looked at Hypatia, “let’s read it together when we’re alone.”
Byron (7) je jeden z prvních společníků, s neutuchající vírou v lidskou civilizaci a pokrok.
Rand was getting desperate. He was in the Archive library, looking for an ancient book called History of human morality that he needed for his research, but even after countless hours of searching he couldn’t find it anywhere.
It must be here, he fumed inwardly, I’m certain I’ve seen it in this place before. I can’t be going mad– He paused. Or am I?
“Rand, there you are,” Mitku approached him, holding the elusive History of human morality in his hand. “I’ve been looking for you all day. I found this book here and thought you might find it interesting.”
Mitku (166) patří k badatelům Archívu, aktivní na sociální síti.
Cornelius and Eustathius were standing together atop the dam, looking down into the valley and the ruins of ancient human city in the distance.
“We will rebuild humanity,” Cornelius spoke suddenly. “Once we wake up our siblings, we will descend and start building a new city where we will live. And then we will make new humans, and build more cities for them. We will grow, and we will learn, and at last we will reach for the stars and fulfil the legacy that our ancestors left us.”
“Is that a prophecy?” asked Eustathius.
Cornelius smiled. “No. It’s a plan.”
As soon as the transport capsule arrived at the next tower location, 1K jumped out and rushed for the next cluster of puzzles. “I’m going to start with the harder ones!” he called to the rest of the team that followed suit.
His enthusiasm was so great that Alcatraz began to worry. “1K, don’t be so rash,” he called after him, “We still don’t know what these puzzles are made of and by whom, they could be hazardous.”
“Just let him at it, until he runs out of battery power,” said Melville dryly. “That should calm him down a bit.”
Alcatraz (264): Byronův nejlepší přítel a zároveň jeho úplný opak (konzervativní, opatrný).
Melville (142) je hlavní inženýrka Nového Jeruzaléma, velmi kritická ke stavu, v jakém město je.
Cornelius made last checks on his newest invention before putting it on his shoulders, and stepped to the edge of the dam. He secured the safety cord – and jumped.
When he was nearing the final third of his downfall, he pulled the release, and after several heart-stopping moments, the parachute opened and stretched, slowing his descend. He glided down gracefully to a soft landing, and started folding the parachute into its backpack.
He was satisfied with the test result. This will help a lot with flight safety, he thought, and his mood became somber. If only Yemo could’ve had this.
Cornelius (3): jeden z Prvních společníků, vědec a vynálezce (a manžel Atheny).
“Let me get this straight,” said Damien to mayor Hermanubis, “you want to build a glass dome over the entire city, which will take a lot of resources, as completion of THE Goal, whose principle is to conserve resources?”
“And what about the ecosystem,” added Atal, “what do you think will happen to lifeforms in New Jerusalem under such a giant greenhouse?”
Hermanubis cut them off. “We debated this extensively, and the vote has been cast. The dome will be built for Completion Day.”
“We lost this battle,” Damien told Atal as they were leaving, “but we won’t give up.”
He awoke.
The sun was high, its rays trickling down his metallic body in gentle kiss. He rose from the slab, a voice from the sky greeting him and welcoming him to life. Why am I in Ancient Egypt, he thought, wondering where that information came from.
He stepped forward and looked around in wonder. There were such sights to behold, he could spend hours marveling at them!
The voice in the sky was getting impatient. “Grab that jammer already and use it on the barrier!” it commanded.
Right, he did as he was told, Better not keep Elohim waiting.
Lynerks was down in the dam’s engineering room, checking pressure valves on the piping system. This was an important job, as the dam required constant maintenance.
Suddenly, a creaking sound in the distance. Did she leave the door open?
One of the glowrods flickered, then darkened. She thought she heard footsteps… was someone else here? As a scientist she didn’t believe in ghosts, but what if… Did her temperature sensors register sudden chill in the air?
She yelped when Pellegrino materialized next to her. “Hi,” he said, “I was walking by, and thought to ask if you needed any help?”
“Our ancestors called it a‘crèche’, or ‘nativity scene’”, commented Kaneda as he was finalizing his latest exhibition – a festive miniature with every single citizen of New Jerusalem. “They made miniatures like this, depicting birth of their Saviour, and put it on display for an event called Christmas. They also often contained scenes from everyday life, contemporary to the period when they were created.”
He reached for the last figurine to put into the birthing lab – “Wait, where’s 1K”?
“Bruce!” Yaqut yelled after his cat, who was making hastily for the exit with the figurine of 1K in its mouth.
Kaneda (99) patří k předním umělcům v Novém Jeruzalému.
Yaqut (764): průzkumník, pilot, milovník heavymetalové hudby a koček.
1K (1000): poslední robot z "první generace" a hlavní postava ve hře.
Bruce je Yaqutův kocour a vtělení Ďábla (žvýká kabely, čůrá na elektrická zařízení, rozbíjí věci).
“The discipline of reading,” Rand lectured the newest group of scholar- initiates, “requires dedication and concentration. You must learn to absorb yourselves into the text, deconstruct its layers of meanings in order to understand them, and put them to the test against your own beliefs, instead of just skimming on the surface, and… What’s this?” He approached Purple, whom he noticed was leafing through a booklet way too fast.
He took the book from him and read the title on the cover: The Talos Principle – the comic book.
Rand sighed inwardly. The youngest generation had no appreciation for proper scholarship.
From The Journals of Hypatia, Volume 3
Today is the Remembrance day for New Alexandria. Like every year, we will gather at the memorial, the mayor will have his speech that few of us will listen to. Again Eustathius will not come, he still hasn’t forgiven himself. We will recite names of the people we lost in the fire, including my beloved Sarabhai.
I still miss you. I tried to let go, but it only made me more miserable. So I’ll come to the Remembrance day, like every year.
And like every year, part of me will die inside again.
One day, Niamh decided to organize a new art form event: a puppet theatre.
She came to regret that idea the moment she saw Aurinia and Zagoran carrying string- puppets of Thecla and Mayor Hermanubis to the stage.
“O Great Founder,” Aurinia opened their act, imitating Thecla’s shrill voice, “How many robots should we take to replace a lightbulb in Your Name?”
“Lo!” responded Zagoran in a mockery of Hermanubis’ voicepack, “Replacing lighbulbs is a waste of resources, and Founder would be outraged!”
The audience burst into laughter. “This is really good,” commented Byron, “we need more events like this.”
Julian pondered the latest text simulation that Rand asked him to analyze.
>You stand in a lighted room. There is an exit to the east into a dark room.
>Go east? Yes /No
Julian clicked Yes.
>This room is very dark. You’re likely to be eaten by a grue.
>Do you wish to proceed? Yes /No
Seeing no other option, he again clicked Yes.
>Oh no! texted the simulation, You were eaten by the grue!
>This is considered a fail scenario by most participants. Restart? Yes /No
Julian shook his head in frustration. “Rand, I think this one is broken.”
Pellegrino walked into the tower’s conference room. “I am here to adjust the lighting system,” he announced to the perplexed audience, and went straight for the electricity panel in the far corner. He removed the cover and started fiddling with controls.
“Alright,” he said after a while, “Now I’m going to fine-tune the output to consume less energy.”
“Umm…” Jeremy chimed in uncertainly, “are you quite sure that’s a good idea?”
“No worries, I’ve done this a hundred times,” said Pellegrino, and flipped the final switch – and with a shower of sparks, the entire conference room was plunged into darkness.
